There were smiles aplenty. Well, it was almost Christmas, but there were also other reasons for all the happy faces: Mayor Lauri Lyly of the City of Tampere managed to get almost every municipal partnership agreement signed concerning the bid for the title of European Capital of Culture.
This time, his co-signatory was Antero Alenius, the Municipal Manager of Hämeenkyrö.
Let’s say ‘almost,’ because one agreement, although signed, might still be in the post.
Tampere and Tampere Region’s bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2026 now includes a total of 20 municipalities. In addition to the City of Tampere and main municipal partner, the town of Mänttä-Vilppula, 17 municipalities in Tampere Region have already signed on and Kuhmoinen, due to join Tampere Region in 2021, will follow. The door is also still being held open for any newcomers.
The actual ECoC bid will be drafted during the spring. In the bid, the region surrounding Tampere will be highly visible. The preparations will continue in January with meetings among the cultural managers of the participating municipalities.
